Until last week, the CORE WG was one of the groups under my
responsibility at the IETF, so I'm somewhat familiar with the
technology. It's not clear to me if it will be widely deployed, but
there are lots of implementations. There's also an HTTP mapping:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-castellani-core-http-mapping-03
I keep thinking that an XMPP mapping might prove useful, too, although
CoAP is designed to be RESTful so the HTTP mapping is more straightforward.

I was not aware of this. Looks very interesting. A

should be looked at as well?
I have also been casually looking at EXI as a compact representation of
XML...

Have folks here looked into CoAP, the Constrained Application Protocol?

It might be useful to define a mapping between CoAP and XMPP for
gateways between home/local area networks and the cloud...
