There's been talk of having a half-day "deep dive" on XMPP in
IOT/SmartGrid applications at the XMPP Summit in late October:
http://wiki.xmpp.org:12480/web/Summit_12
If you are planning to attend, please update that wiki page or post to
the summit(a)xmpp.org list. It would be helpful, I think, to have
several folks summarize what they've been working on and what trends
and challenges they see in this space.
Thanks!
Peter
P.S. I'm digging out from a pile of work tasks and will try to follow
up in more detail soon about IOT-related topics.

Hello William Miller
Very sorry for the long delay in responding to your mail.
I'm very interested in participating in any discussions and/or work relating to using XMPP as a transport mechanism in IoT and sensor networks. We're participating in various projects whose effort it is to establish XMPP in sensor and metering data applications, as well as integration between platforms/systems/3rd party services.
Is it possible for you to on this list, or to me privately, share more information on how IEEE 1451 uses XMPP to interchange sensor data? I could only see block diagrams in your presentation where you transport MODBUS over XMPP, but not how it is done.
It's part of my goal as member of XSF to participate in the formation of XMPP extensions for interchange of sensor & metering data in an interoperable and secure manner. Is it your interest to participate in such XEP work?
Sincerely,
Peter Waher

To all IoT members,
I have included a recent presentation entitled "XMPP for the Smart Grid"
that discusses the new ISO/IEC/IEEE 21451-1-4 XMPP Smart Transducers Standard.
There are a number of groups in the standard community who are now becoming aware
of the 21451-1-4 standard. The IEEE 1451.1.4 standard is being sponsored by Dr. Kang Lee at NIST
chairman of IEEE TC9 Sensor Technology and sponsor of the 1451 series of smart transducer standard.

I thought I'd share with you my Smart Grid Educational Series presentation including an audio recording:
The SG Educational Series is hosted by Dr. Erfan Ibrahim who was previously with EPRI.

Peter,
New capabilities are being added to offer an Identity Provider (IdP) for our
IPDX product using
XMPP which will identify devices and users that are connected to a network.
This capability
will offer the ability to assure that a device or users is authorized to
participate in a network
and be able to share information with multiple users, devices, and
applications.
The following article entitled "Protocol Transformation defense against
cyber-attack" will appear
in CONTROL magazine in the June 2012 issue.
See latest updates that now includes Android support:
http://www.mact-usa.com.
The newest version will also include changes supported in Window 8 and Apple
IoS due out next month.
Protocol transformation eliminates penetration of viruses and can control
read/write access and policy administration on a packet level. This
capability prevents certain registers from being accessed or changes without
authorization. This capability is inherent in the approach which does not
require a VPN. Most significantly the end devices do not have to include
virus protection even when accessed via the Internet. All traffic is
secured end-to-end using Transport Layer Security (TLS).
The following is an article in International Cement Review (ICR) May 2012
entitled "XMPP Revisited":

Hello Madina.
Do you have a link to your diploma work? How does it relate to Internet of Things?
This group just opened up. I guess we're waiting for a sufficient amount of interested parties to be able to start to discuss how the XMPP architecture can be used to in IoT, and the Semantic Web. We work with AMR, IoT and Semantic Web, and would also like to participate in setting standards for how we can extend XMPP across the semantic web (communicate with semantic resources over XMPP instead of over HTTP, extend SPARQL to include XMPP-based resources, etc.), and also use as a transport mechanism in sensor networks. Perhaps we could also create some kind of test-bed for IoT using XMPP and Semantic Web technologies?
How many members of the IoT XMPP group are now/soon ready/interested in participating in such work?
Or is it customary for one party to suggest a solution based on what they've already done?
Sincerely,
Peter Waher

Hello
My diploma work was associated with semantic WEB and semantic analysis. I created a program that is used together four main areas - semantic networks, products, frames, and logical model. I developed the system for not simply answer and understand what she writes the user - the main thing was that she understood the nature of both objects with their properties and actions and their relationships.
At the moment I am developing a chat, using hmpp server. I would be very interessting take part in the structuring and establishment of similar Projects summary. How can I participate in your discus and things?
Madina
